The Center for the Arts and Marine Sciences is located in Lajes do Pico, specifically in the old SIBIL whale factory, industrial equipment that was dedicated to the transformation of large cetaceans into oils and flours since 1955 until the early 80's of the 20th century.
The Center for the Arts and Marine Sciences is a local and regional museum, a reference as far as the azorean whaling culture is concerned.
By visiting the Center for the Arts and Marine Sciences, place that honours the whaling memory, you can see the industrial equipment, a multimedia exhibition entitled "Giants of the Sea" that explores the biology and ecology of the large cetaceans and a “Sea Life” exhibition, with different animal sculptures that can be watched in the Azores sea, in the Atlantic Ocean.
In the Gift Shop, that is open to the public, you can find one of the best bookstores in the island, local and regional handicraft, merchandising, clothing, food products, among others.
